FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS AN ORTHODONTIST?

An orthodontist is a specialist who focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating misaligned bites.  They have the expertise to use appliances like braces to straighten the teeth for a smile that not only looks great, but is more functional as well.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY BRACES?

It is imperative to have excellent oral hygiene while in orthodontic treatment.  Patient's should brush their teeth multiple times throughout the day to ensure their teeth are clean.  Our team will give you specific instructions at the start of treatment on how to properly care for your braces.  This includes special toothbrushes, flossing aids, and mouth rinses to help you achieve a beautiful smile!

DO I NEED A REFERRAL FROM MY DENTIST TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT?

No, you sure don't.  Many of our patients are referred to us from their general dentist, however, the majority of our patients are sent to us by their family and friends.

AM I TOO OLD FOR BRACES?

No way! You are never too old for a healthy smile and the confidence that comes along with it.  Many adults are seeking treatment, and love having the option of Invisalign® or clear brackets for a more esthetic option.

WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING DOES DR. CROWE HAVE?

Dr. Crowe is a specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, meaning he has the training to diagnose and treat and misalignments of the teeth and jaw, as well as the facial structure.  Dr. Crowe attended dental school at WVU School of Dentistry where he received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.  He then completed his specialty training and residency in orthodontics at the same institution.  Dr. Crowe continues to learn about cutting edge technology in orthodontics through various continuing education courses throughout the year.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE BRACES?

There are many factors that come into play when determining treatment times.  The complexity of the case, need for various appliances, and compliance with treatment all affect the length of treatment.  Generally speaking, most patients are out of braces within 12-24 months.

HOW MUCH DO BRACES COST?  ARE THERE FINANCING OPTIONS AVAILABLE?

Orthodontics fees depend on the complexity of the case.  We will explain the exact and financial options during your consultation.  We have in-house financing options available and accommodate your needs and will be happy to review your options with you!

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE TO SEE AN ORTHODONTIST?

A specialist in orthodontics has the education and proficiency to prevent, diagnose, and treat an improper bite.  They can determine the underlying cause of your orthodontic issues and create a customized treatment plan for the most effective and long-term results.  They're trained in straightening the teeth with braces, Invisalign® and other appliances, as well as guiding jaw growth with dentofacial orthopedics.  Because of the complex relationship between the teeth and jaws, and the fact that treatment can permanently change your smile and facial structure, it is in your best interest to see a specialist.

DO I CONTINUE TO SEE MY DENTIST WHILE I HAVE BRACES?

Absolutely!  We recommend maintaining your regularly scheduled appointments with your dentist at least every 6 months for a cleaning and examination while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

WILL I HAVE TO WEAR RUBBER BANDS?

Maybe.  Rubber bands are utilized in the correction of a misaligned bite.  You may or may not need rubber bands, depending on how your teeth fit together.

DO BRACES HURT?

Generally speaking, braces will make your teeth sore for the first few days after an adjustment.  Sticking to softer foods and Tylenol/ibuprofen is typically enough to control the discomfort.

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD FIRST SEE AN ORTHODONTIST?

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends children visit an orthodontist by the age of 7.  This allows Dr. Crowe to monitor the development and growth of the teeth, jaws, and facial structure and look for any developmental issues.  The end-goal of early orthodontic treatment (around ages 7-9) is limited to necessity, and does not take esthetics into account.  We take a very conservative approach to treating children and in many cases, this is just an observational period.

HOW OFTEN WILL I HAVE APPOINTMENTS?

Appointments vary from patient to patient, but most intervals are every 4-6 weeks.

ARE THERE FOOD LIMITATIONS WITH BRACES?

Yes -- as a rule of thumb, any food that is crunchy, hard, sticky, or chewy should be avoided as these types of foods can break your braces.  You can avoid unnecessary appointments and increased treatment time by following these instructions.
